The State of My Genea-Progress

Here we are at the end of January. Does anyone else feel that the first month of 2012 has just zipped on by? I wonder how all of my fellow Geneabloggers are doing with their goals? Is the buddy system still working for you?

My own personal report card at the moment is: B+. I've set some specific research, writing, and organizational goals.

Writing: "The Book" - I haven't had much time to devote to this project. I have had four articles to write in the past two weeks, plus finalizing my three presentations for the upcoming RootsTech conference. Sleep has become a luxury, and I'm lucky that my husband is still talking to me. Nevertheless, I've still tried to get in at least 15 minutes of writing per day. But, I MUST do better!

Research: No progress at all since last update. Hoping to find some information at the Family History Library later this week. I've looked up the film numbers of the microfilms I want to view and have saved this list as a PDF in Evernote because I can access it from my Blackberry, my iPad or any computer.

Organizational: I've continued to purge files in my filing cabinet--spending approximately 2 hours each weekend, and sorting out books that I want to donate to the "Friends of the Library" for their spring sale.

One area I have made progress in is trying to block out any outside negative influences on my time and energy. I experienced a small setback last week, but was able to regroup and continue to focus on what I need to accomplish.

I haven't checked in with my genea-buddy in awhile. I will do that today.

2012 Goals: The Genea-Progress Report One Week In

It's hard to believe we're already into Week 2 of the New Year. Many of us in the genealogy community have blogged about the personal research and/or professional goals we've set for 2012, and some of us have partnered with a genea-buddy to help us reach them.

You can read about my research/writing goals in my "Twelve for '12" post. My genea-buddy is Donna Pointkouski, author of the What's Past is Prologue Blog and author/creator of The Catholic Gene Blog.

The Goals

Donna and I each broke down our goals into three main categories: Writing, Research, and Organizational (based on a similar system used by fellow Bloggers, Denise Levenick of The Family Curator, and Amy Coffin of the We Tree Blog).

I'm reporting my progress to Donna on the following:

Writing: Finish a new nonfiction book--draft by 4/1/12; final product published by the end of 2012 (big dreams here, but really want to make it happen!)

Research: 1) My paternal grandmother's brother, Mihaly Fencsak who moved to Argentina; 2) My maternal grandmother's brother Istvan Straka who stayed in Slovakia

Organizing: Purging paper files; 2) Going as paperless as possible; 3) Organizing my office.

We've set up a shared document in Google Docs (we titled it: "The Slavic Pennsylvania Gals’ 2012 Genealogy Buddy Goal Project") where we can make notes and report our progress. I this first week, we have e-mailed each other updates and even talked on the phone.

Here's how I did in my first week:

Writing: "The Book" - I have been writing for at least 30 minutes per day. Usually 15 minutes in the morning, and 15 minutes at night. Focusing now on the Preface/Introduction.

Research: I haven't made much progress yet. I hope to do some research at the Family History Library in February. I'm also working with a professional researcher based in Slovakia and need to decide where to send him next.

Organizational: I fear this task will be the most difficult because it truly seems never-ending! I have purged about six file boxes, and have made efforts to go paperless by scanning documents, arranging for electronic subscriptions for magazines, etc. when possible and switching over to e-bills and e-statements.

The Buddy System: It Works for Me

I like the accountability factor of the genea-biuddy system. I feel like I have done a pretty good job thus far. As we go further into 2012, I hope that I can keep up the pace. I really want to score a slam dunk on these goals!

I am delighted to announce that I have been appointed to serve on the Federation of Genealogical Society's Board of Directors for 2012, and will be serving as Publications Committee chair .

Twelve for '12

I like setting goals for genealogy and writing. Below are my 2012 goals, and also the “report card” for how I did with those goals I outlined in my "Eleven for '11" post.

Goals for 2012

1. Continue to diversify my freelance career to achieve a financially successful balance between writing, speaking, and teaching.

2. Publish a new book.

3. Publish Kindle, iPad, and Nook versions of my Baba's Kitchen and Three Slovak Women books.

4. Step out of my comfort zone and branch out into new writing markets (Query at least three non-genealogy publications and get the assignments).

5. Continue my search for information about my grandmother's brother who stayed in Slovakia.

6. Find out more about another ancestor who left Slovakia for Argentina.

7. Finally explore genealogy offerings in Second Life.

8. Develop and present more webinars/virtual lectures.

9. Learn more about Google Plus (G+) and how I can use it for genealogy/writing.

10 Continue purging excess clutter. Move more in the direction of paperless systems; organize my home office!

11. Write more blog posts (both on this blog and The Catholic Gene).

12. Eliminate any negative thoughts, energies, and activities that serve as obstacles or block me from achieving my goals.

My Report Card for Eleven for '11

[As the New Year approaches, I've composed a list of 11 genealogy/writing goals I have for 2011].

1. Follow up on researching my Alzo ancestors using information I obtained from my trip to Slovakia this summer: It seems I never have enough time to research my own family, but I believe I made decent progress on this goal. My great-grandfather was a “bird of passage” who traveled back and forth between America Slovakia to earn money to purchase land. I was able to track down passenger arrival lists to document his comings and goings.

2. Publish revised editions (and electronic versions) of my books, Three Slovak Women and Baba's Kitchen. Published print versions (and ebook version for BK) Next up: Versions for Kindle, Nook, and iPad.

3. Try to find out more about my grandmother's brother who stayed in Slovakia. Still working on this with the help of researcher, Michal Razus, in Slovakia.

4. Publish a new book. Did not meet this goal due to extenuating circumstances. But I did publish second editions of two of my books (see #2 above)

5. Explore genealogy in Second Life. I created an account and poked around a bit; but never had time to explore as I had hoped. Will try in 2012!

6. Book additional speaking engagements--including some remote/virtual lectures. Did this. See Top 10 Genealogy and Writing Moments for 2011.

7. Blog more frequently and try to use Twitter more for genealogical purposes. I didn’t blog as often as I would have liked to (although I did write five posts for The Catholic Gene). I think I used Twitter as much as I had anticipated I would.

8. Continue to expand my freelance writing career. Did this and still working on it!

9. Write for at least 15 minutes per day (about ancestors or topics not associated with assignments or deadline projects). I’m happy to say that I was able to do this most days, with a few exceptions when I was on the road.

10. Finish organizing my father's scrapbook of his basketball days. I accomplished this and am so happy about it!

11. Purge, purge, purge the clutter! Organize all the other! Didn’t do quite enough, but I made an effort.

Top 10 Genealogy and Writing Moments for 2011

Another year is drawing to a close. It's the time for reflection and resolutions. Last year I listed my Top Ten Genealogical Moments for 2010. This year, I am including the standout moments for me in both genealogy and writing.

10. Having articles published in Family Tree Magazine, Family Chronicle Magazine, Internet Genealogy Magazine, and The Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly (and having the cover article in the September 2011 issue), as well as online for the Archives.com Experts series. Also, being invited to be a contributor for the new blog: The Catholic Gene.

9. Teaching three online courses for Family Tree University and several for the National Institute for Genealogical Studies.

8. Discovering that my grandparents had another baby (Mary) I never knew about. She was their first born child, and died at age 6 months of pneumonia. Nobody in my father's family ever mentioned her. I learned about her from a tiny obituary in an old hometown newspaper and was able to order her death certificate.

7. Appearing as a guest several times on Geneabloggers Radio, and also on the FGS MySociety Radio Show.

6. Being selected as a speaker for the first RootsTech conference, and also for the first time at the Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference, in Springfield, IL.

5. Publishing revised editions of my books, Baba’s Kitchen: Slovak & Rusyn Family Recipes & Traditions, Second Edition (available now at Lulu.com); and Three Slovak Women, Second Edition (in press with CreateSpace).

4. Enjoying visits with fellow genealogists/friends. First, during an extended visit to California: visiting San Francisco, Napa Valley, Oakland, Los Angeles, and Burbank. Then, in October, during a visit to Connecticut to attend a conference hosted by the Polish Genealogical Society of Connecticut and the Northeast.

3. Learning more about the son of an interesting cousin on my Alzo side. It’s one of those “greatness can come even out of tragic circumstances”-type stories. I plan to write an article (and accompanying blog post) about the discovery in the coming months.

2. Branching out to the world of Webinars (seminars given online). I offered several free webinars on my own in March 2011, and also presented Webinars for Legacy Family Tree and the SCGS Jamboree extension series.

It was difficult to come up with a single, outstanding moment for 2011. So, for the top spot I chose a combination of moments:

1. Having the opportunity to visit so many great cities and present at various conferences including: RootsTech, Ontario Genealogical Society (Canada), Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree, Utah Genealogical Association, Federation of Genealogical Societies, Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International, and the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, as well as numerous groups and societies in Pennsylvania, New York, and other states

Looking back, I’d say 2011 was a pretty good year, and I am looking forward to greater challenges and new opportunities for my genealogical research and writing in 2012.

Family Recipe Friday: Auntie B's Christmas Cookies

Auntie B’s Christmas (Cut-Out) Cookies

Ever since I was a young girl these cookies have been a “must-bake” at Christmas! The almond extract provides a unique flavor.

1 c. butter
1-½ c. sugar
3 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. almond extract

4 c. flour
½ tsp. baking soda

Cream together the butter and sugar. Beat in eggs. Add vanilla and almond extracts and mix well.

Mix together flour and baking soda. Add to mixture and mix well.

Let stand in refrigerator for about 30 min. Roll out dough with rolling pin on floured board.

Use cookie cutters to cut out cookies. Bake at 350 °F for 15 minutes. Using parchment paper helps to prevent cookies from sticking to pan (or you can use non-stick cooking spray—lightly coat pans).

Frosting and Decorating

1 egg white
1 c. powdered sugar
Few grains salt

Beat egg white with electric mixer and add 1 tsp. cold water; beat again.

Gradually add powdered sugar to beaten egg white and beat until smooth, with a consistency to pour slightly.

For colored icing, divide into small bowls and add few drops of food coloring of desired color.

Remembering Dad

In memory of my father, John, on the sixth anniversary of his passing away.

Can't believe it's been that long since I've seen your smile or heard your laugh. I remember that morning when I held your hand as you took your last breath. Saying goodbye to you was one of the most difficult moments I've ever had to experience. I am forever grateful for all you gave me and all you taught me. Rest in peace. Love you.

Thanksgiving Top Ten

Today is Thanksgiving, and here are ten things I am especially thankful for this year.

1. Good Health. It may sound cliché , but I'm always grateful to receive good news from my routine medical exams and tests.

2. The Best Husband. He puts up with my crazy schedule and supports my goals and dreams.

3. Family: My aunts, uncle and cousins. I love you all.

4. Fabulous Friends. So blessed to have you in my life.

5. A Writer's Life. It's so fulfilling to be able to make a living as a writer.

6. Freedom. Thanks to the men and women who sacrifice so much so that I can enjoy freedom.

7. My Slovak/Rusyn Heritage. Strong people. Big hearts.

8. A Home. It's not the building that counts, but the love contained within its walls.

9. Loving Parents. I miss them both very much but so grateful for the love they gave me and for how they raised me.

10. Determined Grandparents. For having the courage to get on the boats. I owe all the benefits I enjoy today to their decisions.

What I Did on My Summer Vacation

When I was in grade school, one of the first assignments we had in English class after our long three-month break was to write an essay “What I Did on My Summer Vacation.”

Since Labor Day marks the “unofficial” end of summer and students of all ages get into “back to school” mode, I thought it would be fun to write my grown-up essay about how I spent my summer vacation.

Conferences, Conferences, Conferences!

I had the pleasure of being an invited speaker for three excellent conferences. Two actually took place technically in the spring, but I’m including them anyway: The Ontario Genealogical Society May 13-15, 2011 in Hamilton, and the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree in Burbank, CA June 8-10. In August (19-20) I spoke at the Utah Genealogical Association's summer conference, and that same weekend I also participated (via pre-recorded video) in Family Tree Univeristy’s first virtual conference. In a few days, I will be giving three talks at the Federation of Genealogical Societies 2011 Conference in Springfield, IL.

I also presented two webinars: One for the SCGS Extension webinar series and another for Legacy Family Tree.

Hangin’ with Genea-Peeps

Part of the fun of genealogy conferences is getting to spend time with friends/colleagues. As a bonus, before the SCGS Jamboree, I was able to spend time with fellow genealogists/bloggers Donna Pointkouski (What’s Past is Prologue), Steve Danko (Steve’s Genealogy Blog), and Kathryn Doyle (CaliforniaAncestors.org).

[Also, how could I forget??? (thanks Sheri!) the fabulous day trip to Los Angeles and Rodeo Drive with Donna, Denise Levenick (The Family Curator), and Sheri Fenley (The Educated Genealogist). In our travels we came across the now infamous "Peter the Parrot." Later that night we met up with the one and only footnoteMaven for dinner and got to meet Mr. Family Curator too!

I also spent many Friday nights chatting with fellow genealogists while listening to the many excellent guests on Geneabloggers Radio.

Family Reunion

In July I attended my family’s 44th annual reunion (mom’s side). I wrote about it in the post: Ten Things I Learned at Our Family Reunion.

Living the Writing Life

It has been an unusually busy summer for me writing-wise (which is why I haven’t been posting much here). I was blessed with an abundance of freelance writing assignments for magazines and online content sites. In addition, I’ve been working on developing new courses for both the National Institute for Genealogical Studies, and Family Tree University. I have also revised my popular recipe book: Baba’s Kitchen: Slovak and Rusyn Family Recipes and Traditions (stay tuned to this Blog for a post soon about the revised edition and how to purchase it), and have been fervently working on a new book (can’t reveal the details yet but it’s nonfiction and a fascinating story).

Chasing Elusive Ancestors

I haven’t had much time to work on my own genealogy but I did manage to squeeze a few hours in here and there searching online databases and viewing microfilm at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Most of this work has been on my paternal side of the family, but I’ve also made an interesting new connection regarding one of my maternal lines (hope to blog more about this in the near future).

So Long Summer!

I can’t believe that the summer is over, but I had some wonderful personal and professional experiences, and I’m looking forward to a productive fall with plenty more writing projects, a number of speaking engagements, and several classes both in the classroom and online.

I've Got a Confession to Make...

I've got a confession to make....

No, I didn't do something awful. Actually, quite the opposite. I've done something I feel really good about. I signed up to be a contributor to a new Blog: The Catholic Gene, a Blog "dedicated to the faith of our fathers and mothers…and their ancestors. This Blog was launched by my friend and fellow genealogist, Donna Pointkouski, who also writes another Blog, "What's Past Is Prologue," and will feature articles by a diverse group of authors who share a strong Catholic identity and a love for genealogy.

Besides Donna, and yours truly, you'll find several other noted genealogists and bloggers among the regular contributors including:

Two Genealogy Events at One Time?

This weekend it seems I will be in teaching genealogy in two places at one time. Magic trick? Optical illusion? No. And, as much as I sometimes wish for it to happen, I've not been cloned either. I will be appearing in person today and tomorrow at the Utah Genealogical Association's Summer Conference in Sandy, UT. Click here for more information. I will be giving four talks and the banquet talk tonight, "100 Years of Gratitude: A Granddaughter's Genealogical Journey." And, thanks to technology and the internet I will also be participating in Family Tree University's Virtual Conference this weekend. Ten Things I Learned at Our Family Reunion-2011 Edition

On July 9, 2011 my mother’s family held it’s 44^th annual reunion at South Park near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We hold these gatherings under the acronym ALAFFFA (this stands for Abbott, Lizanov, Alzo, Figlar, Figlar, Figlar, Augenstein). Each year we have a different theme for our reunion. This year’s theme was Mardis Gras.

Here are ten things I learned at my 2011 Family Reunion:

1. It takes teamwork and good advanced planning to make sure everything goes smoothly on the day, and yet the day comes and goes so quickly—I never get enough time to visit with all of my aunts, uncles, or cousins.

2. It’s amazing we’ve having this reunion faithfully for 44 years and that my generation is now in charge.

3. For those no longer with us: Grandma and Grandpap, Doug, Uncle John, Aunt Ann, Uncle Johnny, Aunt Toni, Uncle Joe. We miss you all very much. We know you are with us in spirit.

4. If anything goes wrong, it’s always “Eddie’s fault—Eddie!!!” (just teasing cousin, Ed).

5. You can plan organized activities and games, or have the latest toys or gadgets, but the kids seem to have the best time with good old fashioned fun: the sliding board and climbing apparatus, and anything that involves water (water balloons, squirt guns, etc.)

6. There has never been an event in my family where we ran out of food. We always have way too much (and plenty of leftovers)!

7. Even your closest relative will fight you for the last few homemade Lady Locks (small, cream filled puff pastries that melt in your mouth). My mother used to be the chief baker of these delights, but she passed the torch on to my Aunt Margie who makes them now that Mom has passed away.

8. There will always be a need to “Go for Ice” (inside joke in our family).

9. It’s not a real party unless “Aunt Fun” is there! And Uncle Mike always has the most creative t-shirt reflecting the theme.

10. My grandparents always stressed the importance of family and of being together. Yes, life moves on and the reunions evolve but one thing remains constant: We honor their memory by making the effort to gather each year.

Next year is our 45th reunion and we've already started making plans for a special reunion weekend celebration.

It's Been a Fun Five Years for The Accidental Genealogist

Today I've reached a milestone for this Blog. I have enjoyed sharing my thoughts about my two favorite subjects--writing and genealogy--for five years. Due to other commitments I don't get to post as often as I would like, and I tend to be a bit more selective about the topics I do choose to write about. Here are my five favorite personal highlights from the past five years:

When I first created this Blog in 2006, I wasn't sure what I would write about or how to do it, and I questioned whether my title of "The Accidental Genealogist" would be a good one, but it seems like it was because since that time I have seen it turn up in other contexts, including when in 2009 I learned that another blog with the same title appeared on another blogging platform long after mine was started. Thankfully, it was a new blogger who understood and found another title.

It's been a fun five years and I would like to extend my appreciation to everyone who reads/follows this blog and those who have commented on my posts. I look forward to sharing more about my ancestors and about genealogy and writing.

This Father's Day, in memory of my father, John Alzo, I reflect on ten things I learned from him.

Ten Things I Learned from My Father

1. Stay loyal to your family. My father was the youngest of four. He had three older sisters (Ann, Betty, and Helen) who looked after him when he was a boy. But later in life, Dad would be there for his sisters to look after them during their respective illnesses. Certainly family has issues or problems, but my father always tried to stay "neutral"--he never wanted to be estranged from his sisters or be on bad terms with them. Dad appreciated and respected them.

2. Don't be afraid of hard work. My father was a carpenter. He worked for the Union Railroad. When Dad retired in 1983, his boss gave him a handwritten letter that said: "I had to write you a note because I know of no way to let you know how much I think of you as a man, and a craftsman. This country was built by men like you who took pride in their work. I don't know where we will find the men to replace them and you." In addition to his job on the railroad, Dad performed his own version of "Extreme Makeovers" on a number of houses throughout his hometown of Duquesne, Pennsylvania and its surrounding areas. His talents were reflected in the countless roofs, paneling jobs, cabinets, decks, and more. Dad's job on the railroad was not glamorous, but he took great pride in his work. Learning from Dad, I take pride in my own work--no matter the job.

3. Smile! My father had the most beautiful smiles and. He was generally a happy guy who loved to laugh and joke. Even in his times of suffering, he found a way to say something cute or funny to his doctors, nurses, and others around him and would give them that smile.

4. Actions Speak Louder Than Words. Dad wasn't much for outwardly expressing his feelings by saying "I love you," all the time, or by hugging and kissing. But it was by his actions that I knew he loved me. He was always there when I needed him. He was the guy you could always count on. I felt safe with Dad. Once in awhile, his softer side would show through his tough exterior, and he would wrap his strong arms around me and give me a hug. And, he would always tuck me in at night and give me a goodnight kiss when I was a little girl. He'd say, "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are." this was the signature sign off of comedian Jimmy Durante.

5. Be a Team Player. My father was a star basketball player in his day--throughout high school, and playing on several semi-professional teams until his late 40s.Whether it was on the basketball court, or in the game of life, Dad was always first and foremost a team player. Today, the idea of working for the good of the team often gets lost in the "me" generation and the "I want it now" society. Dad worked well with others. Perhaps it was partly because of his easygoing nature, or that he could adapt to any situations. He was actually the most unselfish person I have ever known. While others on his basketball teams may have wanted to hog the ball to take top scoring honors, Dad focused on making sure the team won. He was generous with his time and money and would help anyone in need without an ulterior motive or desire for anything in return. Dad was a true gentleman on and off the court.

6. It's Not Presents or Material Things that Matter. My father was not a materialistic person, and was generally unaffected by the idea of holidays. Although he would make sure we had them, he never understood the obsession with presents, gifts, cards, etc. and always told us not to "waste our money" by buying such things for him. What he enjoyed most is just having me and those he loved around him.

7. Be a Good Friend. My father was a loyal and true friend. There were very few people in Duquesne that dad did not know either through basketball, the Slovak Club, the Union Grill, or the Railroad. Dad had such a warm personality that people were attracted to him instantly. But, his circle of core friends did not change very much over the years. Many of these friends were his former basketball teammates. You don't find friendships like that anymore. It is a rare thing today to have the same friends in your 70s that you did in your teens and twenties. Dad was a lucky guy; he was a good friend and had good friends in return.

8. Look After Your Neighbors. My father was the "go-to" guy on our street. Whenever the next door neighbor needed a ride to the beauty parlor, the doctor's office, or the grocery store, or church, my father would gladly volunteer. WIth his carpentry skills he also fixed many a roof, put in paneling, or did other odd jobs for anyone who asked--many times he would not accept any payment.

9. Give From the Heart. My father cared about his family and always tried to do right by others. He gave of himself without expectation of anything in return. Next to his big blue eyes, and beautiful smile, Dad's generous heart was one of his most distinctive features. After Dad passed away, one of my cousins wrote to me: "If all the people in the world could have someone like him in their lives the world would be a much better place and there would be peace through out."

10. Shoot Your Best Shot! Dad used basketball as a metaphor throughout his life. He met the challenges of life like he would a tough opponent on the court; with one simple phrase in mind: “When the chips are down, shoot your best shot.” As I face challenges in my own life, I try to think how my father would tackle a problem or address a situation and try to keep this phrase in mind.

So, on this Father's Day I say "Thanks, Dad" for all you've taught me. I miss you more than you know!

It's Jamboree Time!

Today is opening day for the 2011 Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree. Fellow Bloggers are gathering at "Blogger Island" and attendees are filing in to register and visit exhibit hall before the sessions begin. It is so good to see my colleagues and friends. Yesterday, a special Family History Writer's conference, and I had the honor of serving on the afternoon panel on publishing with Lou Szucs of Ancestry.com and Tom Underhill of Creative Continuum Inc.

Fearless Females: March 31: Mini-Profile

I decided to write a profile for my grandmother's sister, Anna Fencsak Bavolar.

Anna Fencsak Bavolar was born on May 15, 1893 to Ilona and Mihaly Fencsak in Freeland, PA. She arrived in America in 1911, and was matched for marriage to George Bavolar by her sister, Mary Ceyba. Not long after the birth of her first daughter, Mary, Anna returned to Slovakia to care for her mother, who was ill and now re-married to Mihaly Zelenak. During that time Anna experienced conflict with her step-father who was a possessive person and did not want Anna there looking after her mother. Ilona died in 1917, but World War I delayed Anna’s return home until 1920. Anna and her husband eventually had four more children. Anna’s son George was killed trying to jump on a moving truck.

Anna died in 1959 from “myocardial infarction,” and “congestive heart failure.”

My mother taught me to believe in myself and that just because someone else had more money, more advantages, or more opportunities that I shouldn't feel they were better than me, or that this made me less of a person. She also taught me not to give up just because something seemed difficult or impossible to accomplish. Mom was a very smart woman and while at the time I couldn't understand the lessons or principles she was trying to teach, I can truly appreciate them now.

Fearless Females: March 28: Best Friend

My mother's best friend growing up was Dolores. I don't want to infringe on her privacy so I won't post her last name or a photograph or any more details. But I know that my mother was very close with her. While Dolores moved to another state, the two still kept in touch over the years with letters and Christmas cards. Many years ago, when I threw a surprise party for my parents 50th wedding anniversary, I invited Dolores and she came! My mother was so surprised--the two hugged and cried and spent the weekend sharing memories. I know it meant so much to my mom to have her best friend there. It was one of those extra special moments in time that you will always remember.

I'm not sure about my grandmothers. They were close to many of their neighbors and women they knew from church.

Fearless Females: March 27: Immigration Story

The immigration story of my grandmother Verona was what prompted me to begin my genealogical research. She was the last of her siblings to immigrate to America, arriving at age 22 with her niece Mary, who was 16.

She was detained for several days at Ellis Island for medical reasons. I wrote about her experience in my March 19th "Fearless Females" post , "Have you discovered a surprising fact about one of your female ancestors? " and posted an image of the ship's manifest that documented she was detained.

My mother graduated from high school but did not go to college (her parents could not afford it). Mom was very smart and good at math. But she went to work after high school and after she married my father worked part time. I think she sometimes regretted not being able to go to college, and she worked very hard to make sure I was able to, and was so proud that I went to graduate school to earn my M.F.A. degree.

My grandmothers each had what was likely the equivalent of an 8th grade education, but by no means were they unintelligent women. They were at a disadvantage being immigrants and, but somehow they managed their households, raised their children, were able to hold down jobs speaking very little English.

March 25 — Tell how a female ancestor interacted with her children. Was she loving or supportive? A disciplinarian? A bit of both?

My mother was was loving and supportive, but also taught me to have respect for others, especially my elders. My mother was strict but I always knew she loved me and had my best interests at heart. Now that I am adult I can really appreciate my mother's style of parenting. I also thank her for always believing in me and supporting my goals. She was my role model, especially with the way she cared for her own parents. I followed in her footsteps, caring for her and my father during their respective illnesses. My mother taught by example.

Fearless Females: March 24: Shared Traits

I inherited fine hair and fine eyebrows from my paternal grandmother--this trait appears to run on her side of the family. Personality: I tend to take after my mother. I never really thought about who would play my grandmother in the movie version, but I have thought many times that I would like to see my mother portrayed by Catherine Zeta Jones .

When I think of tender I think of my Grandma Verona. While Grandma shared kisses and hugs with us, she didn’t overdo it on the affection. But, she had this quiet way of letting you know how much she loved you. Things like letting me have the last slice of lemon pie, baking me my own small paska bread for my Easter basket, or slipping a few dollar bills into my pocket when my mom wasn’t watching when she knew there was a toy or treat I wanted. Whenever we would all gather at her house on Friday evenings, or on holidays, sometimes she would sit quietly in her chair and just watch all of us. We were a large, noisy bunch, but she was always delighted to have her children and grandchildren around. When you walked in that door you just knew you were welcome and that Grandma was truly happy to see you.

My grandmother has been gone for nearly 27 years and I still miss her very much.

Fearless Females: March 19: Elusive or Brickwall Ancestor

While, I wouldn't call her a brickwall, the female ancestor I'm currently trying to learn more about is my great-grandmother Borbala Manovsky Alzo. I posted a bit about her on the first day of the Fearless Female prompts (Favorite Ancestor).

I have a photograph of her (see March 1 post), learned about her from family in Slovakia, and have the record of her marriage to my great-grandfather. Most of my research will be with records in Slovakia - Greek Catholic Church records and other official documents. I hope to first obtain her death certificate, then go back to find any other available records.

Fearless Females: March 19: Surprising Fact

March 19 — Have you discovered a surprising fact about one of your female ancestors? What was it and how did you learn it? How did you feel when you found out?

One of the more interesting facts I uncovered was my grandmother's hospital stay upon arrival at Ellis Island in August 1922. I first learned about this from the story my mother told me over 20 years ago,when I first began researching my family's history--that my grandmother was suspected to have tuberculosis (she did not--she suffered from asthma most of her life). I then saw a notation "hospital discharged" on the passenger list. Then, I found her listed on a "Record of Detained Aliens."

Of course it's a relief to know that my grandmother was eventually released. I can't imagine how she handled that situation, or how she did not catch TB from being in the hospital ward!

Fearless Females: March 18: Shining Star

March 18 — Shining star: Did you have a female ancestor who had a special talent? Artist, singer, actress, athlete, seamstress, or other? Describe.

I always said that my mother should have opened her own bakery. She was a great cook, but she had a real talent for making cakes, cookies, and other desserts. Her specialty: Lady Locks--dainty puffed pastry with creme filling. She made them for every wedding, baptism, graduation, and other special event in our family and they would disappear from the cookie table in a flash! Making these cookies requires patience and precision and I remember watching my mother labor for hours--working to get the dough just right before wrapping it around the special pins, and then after they came out of the oven would carefully fill each one using a pastry bag, and then delicately coat them with powdered sugar from her "magical" powdered sugar can. They weren't just cookies--they were works of art!

Fearless Females: March 17: Social Butterfly?

March 17 — Social Butterfly? What social organizations or groups did your mother or grandmother belong to? Sewing circle, church group, fraternal benefit society or lodge? Describe her role in the group.

My mother and grandmothers socialized mostly with their neighbors or friends they knew from church. My mother belonged to the Ladies Penna. Slovak Catholic Union and the Roman Catholic Parochial Beneficial Society of Rosary of the Blessed Virgin.

When our immigrant ancestors arrived in the New World, they often settled in enclaves within cities and towns and tended to cluster in specific regions in the United States. It was common for immigrants, particularly those who did not speak English, to travel together and put down roots among relatives, friends, or neighbors from their native land. These so-called “cluster communities” offered a place where the immigrants could transplant and preserve their culture, lifestyle and traditions as best they could in their new surroundings. Seeking to keep their culture as it existed in the homeland, immigrant groups frequently founded their own churches, schools, boarding houses, and other institutions, as well as forming their own academic, athletic, or charitable groups, and fraternal, occupational, and social organizations. Many also established their own ethnic presses that published newspapers and histories to highlight specific communities.

In the late 1800s, fraternal organizations became very popular. Employed largely in difficult and often dangerous industrial occupations, immigrants sought financial protection for themselves and their families. As a result, they established their own fraternal/benevolent organizations to provide mutual insurance and to foster camaraderie and social interaction, and some even as a way to keep ties to traditions or ways of the old country.

Today, we have the Internet. For my parents and grandparents, these fraternal benefit societies and lodges provided the “social networking” opportunities.

I would like to spend the day with my mother Anna, my grandmothers, Elizabeth and Verona, and my great-grandmothers--Ilona, Borbala (Barbara), Maria, and Anna—all together in one place. I imagine we are in Slovakia – in one of my ancestral homes. Of course we would have Slovak food! I picture us sharing a traditional Easter meal: paska, hrutka/syrek (Easter cheese), hrin (beets & horseradish), klobassy, ham, hard-boiled egg--each food symbolic. I would understand and speak the Slovak language so I could listen to their stories and their wisdom and help them prepare all the delicious foods. My family dream team!

Fearless Females: March 14: In the News

March 14 — Newsmakers? Did you have a female ancestor who made the news? Why? Was she famous or notorious? Did she appear in the social column?

My aunt Sr. Camilla Alzo wrote this letter to the local newspaper in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, dated 20 January 1955. A fellow genealogist who is indexing newspaper items for the historical society in my hometown came across this clipping and sent it to me. She took such care in writing a simple letter of thanks.

I've always thought that perhaps my aunt was an indirect influence on my decision to become a writer.

Fearless Females: March 13: Moment of Strength

March 13 - Moment of Strength: Share a story where a female ancestor showed courage or strength in a difficult situation.

For this post, I am remembering my mother, Anna, and the grace and dignity she showed during the final years of her life. In 1997, my mother had triple bypass heart surgery, and simultaneously was diagnosed with renal failure, resulting in her having to endure a three-year regimen of kidney dialysis. During this time I served as her primary caregiver and watched her suffer through all of the side effects associated with the procedure. She showed tremendous courage and strength through it all. My mother passed away in 2000, but she fought until the very end.

The above photo of my mother was taken on the deck in my backyard not long before she passed away. She loved to sit on the deck and feel the warm sunshine and listen to the birds (especially the cardinals--her favorite bird). There is not a day that goes by when I don't think of my mother.

Fearless Females: March 12: Working Girl

My mother worked part-time as a receptionist in an optometrist's office. She likely did not have to because my father had a steady job as a carpenter on the railroad and did other carpentry jobs on the side, but my mother worked to save money to help pay for my high school and college education. I am so grateful.

Both of my grandmothers also worked outside the home--my paternal grandmother at Kennywood Amusement Park and my maternal grandmother worked cleaning houses for families in the Squirrel Hill area of Pittsburgh and for a school superintendent. I'm not ashamed to say that they worked hard and how I admire them for handling their jobs and raising their children. Neither had an easy life, but they didn't complain. They taught by example, and I'm pleased to honor them, and my mother, with this Blog post.

Fearless Females: March 11: Tragic or Unexpected Deaths

My grand (great) Aunt Mary Fencsak Ceyba died in June of 1929 from tuberculosis. She was 38 years old and left behind five children John, Anna, George, Margaret and Helen. Right after her death her husband remarried a widowed neighbor woman who had five children of her own. Mary's son, George, told me that life after his mother's death was difficult.

I wrote about Mary in a case study for the January 2008 issue of Internet Genealogy.

Fearless Females: March 10: Religion

March 10 — What role did religion play in your family? How did your female ancestors practice their faith? If they did not, why didn’t they? Did you have any female ancestors who served their churches in some capacity?

Both of my grandmothers had a deep faith in God. Both were baptized in the Greek Catholic rite. After coming to America, my dad's mother married in the Greek Catholic church but then followed her husband to the Roman Catholic church. My maternal grandmother attending the Greek Catholic church in America but then switched to Russian Orthodox. By doing so, she was then able to continue to observe Christmas on January 7th.

My dad's sister (my "Auntie"--who kept the scrapbook I wrote about in my March 8th post) was a Roman Catholic nun--she spent most of her adult life in a convent in Victoria, Texas. Our family always looked forward to her visits--usually at Christmas and for a few weeks in the summer. Here is a photograph of her once she took the name of Sr. M. Camilla.

Verona Straka was born on November 11, 1899 in Milpos, (Hungrary, later Slovakia) to Maria Verbovsky and Andrej Straka. She was the youngest of 13 children. On July 26, 1922, Verona, along with countless other immigrants, boarded the S.S. Orduna, which left the port of Hamburg, Germany for the United States. When she arrived at Ellis Island, NY on August 7, 1922, she was listed on the ship’s manifest as a “laborer” with $25 in pocket her pocket en route to her final destination—her sister’s house, in Duquesne, Pennsylvania.

I don't have any diaries or journals from any of my female ancestors. I do have one keepsake from my mother--a notebook she kept while planning her wedding in 1947.

In this notebook, she kept a detailed description of all the things she purchased for the big day--from the rings, to the blood test, to how many pounds of ground meat for the stuffed cabbage to be served at the reception! She noted in detail how much each item cost. My mother was meticulous when it came to keeping track of expenses and good at math. I love looking at this book--it reveals so much about my mother's personality.

My favorite meal was Palancinka (palacinky) – A Slovak crepe. I have this recipe in my book: Baba’s Kitchen: Slovak & Rusyn Family Recipes and Traditions. My grandmother used to make them for me for lunch – they were and remain one of my favorites!

I'm going to make them for Shrove Tuesday (instead of pancakes!)

Palacinky

1 c. flour

1-½ c. milk

2 eggs

2 tbsp. sugar

1 tbsp. oil

⅛ tsp. salt

Combine all ingredients beat until smooth.

Heat a small amount of Crisco in a skillet (an omelet pan works nicely). Pour a small amount of batter into skillet and spread around in the skillet (like making a crepe). Cook until brown, then flip over and brown other side. Turn onto a plate. Repeat until all batter is used.

Fill with cottage cheese and jelly (any flavor)*. Roll. Then drizzle some melted browned butter on top.

This is a trunk that my grandmother, Verona Straka Figlar, brought with her from Slovakia when she arrived in America in 1922.

In this trunk, my grandmother carried all of her worldly possessions: two or three dresses, a goose-feather quilt, a few family photographs, and her prayer book. I wonder how she managed this on such a long journey? If the trunk could talk, what stories would it reveal? It is a true family treasure.

My parents met when my father returned home from serving in the Navy during World War II. My mother’s family had moved next door to his family and my mother was friends with his sister, Betty. Betty and her husband John would take their son Jackie to the park or zoo and my mother would go along. When my father came home from the service he went on the outings too and then the two started dating. My parents fell short of celebrating 53 years of marriage—my mother passed away a month before their anniversary. My mother’s parents had an arranged marriage. As the story goes, my grandfather was working in the coal mines of Fairpoint, Ohio and was friends with my grandmother’s brother-in-law. My grandfather was looking for a bride who was literally just “getting off the boat” and his friend John said his wife’s sister was soon coming to America and set the two up. My dad’s parents met at the boarding house my grandmother’s sister, Mary, ran in Duquesne, PA,, when he was working in the steel mill there.

I have marriage records for both sets of grandparents.(I'm opting not to post those here). My father’s parents, John & Elizabeth (below) were married in Duquesne, (Allegheny County) PA in January 1915 in SS. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church. He was 21 and she was 18. I don't have any stories but do have a photo (see below).

My mother’s parents, John & Veronica, were married on November 1,1924 in St. Nicholas Church in Barton, OH. Their wedding and reception lasted for three days. I wrote about their marriage in my book Three Slovak Women.

Fearless Females Blog Post: March 3: Names and Naming Patterns

My name “Lisa” is a form of Elizabeth, which was my paternal grandmother’s name My mother wanted to name me “Holly” but my aunt who is also my godmother suggested the name “Lisa” because it was a popular name at the time. Holly is a nice name, but I'm glad that my mother listened to my aunt--because I like my name.

This photograph is of my mother Anna. I've always liked this photograph of her. It was taken when she was a bridesmaid in her cousin's wedding in the 1940s. I have the picture hanging in my home office. I selected this photograph as a tribute because my mom was as beautiful inside (if not more) as she was on the outside. How I miss her!

Well, I'm embarrassed that I'm a bit late with the first post for my own writing prompt series! Juggling a number of different priorities and deadlines at the moment.

March 1 — Do you have a favorite female ancestor? One you are drawn to or want to learn more about? Write down some key facts you have already learned or what you would like to learn and outline your goals and potential sources you plan to check.

This year I am hoping to learn more about my great-grandmother, Borbala Manovsky Alzo. I listed her as one of my "Family History Three" in a post back in January.

I know very little about her so hope to find out whatever I can. She died in 1961--the same year (just a few months apart) as her son (my grandfather), and I thought this was an interesting coincidence. I have her marriage record thanks to my cousin. I also have some pictures from her funeral. From family I learned that she had several sisters so I'd like to learn more about them too. I want to follow up by obtaining a copy of her death record from Slovakia, and try to find some other documents, as well.
